A motorcyclist has been caught off guard by strong winds in north Otago on Friday.

The person was riding on Maheno-Herbert Rd when they were swamped by gusts, knocking them off their motorbike.

Thankfully, they only sustained minor injuries, a police statement said.

Motorists were being advised to take extra care between Oamaru and Palmerston, given the high winds in the area.

"High-sided vehicles and motorcyclists should take care and all motorists are urged to drive to the conditions," the statement said.
