Brass band members injured after car crashes into them at Auckland's Avondale Santa Parade

Members of a brass band are injured after a Burger Fuel-branded car participating in an Auckland Santa Parade crashed into them from behind.

The parade, on Avondale's Great North Rd, included a Polynesian brass band - members of which were hit by the car on Saturday morning.

Police officers and three ambulances were at the scene, where paramedics were seen tending to people injured as a result of the crash.

St John said they were called to the crash just before 11:45am and responded with three ambulances, one rapid response unit and a manager.

"We assessed and treated five patients in a minor condition at the scene and one patient in a serious condition who was transported to Auckland Hospital," a St John spokesperson said.

Police said it's believed the car experienced a mechanical fault prior to the crash.

The driver is being spoke to and investigations "are ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the crash", police said.

Relieving Auckland City District Commander Inspector Jacqui Whittaker said three people, including two children, were pulled from the vehicle and assaulted.

"Unfortunately a small group of people took it upon themselves to retaliate," Insp Whittaker said.

"Three people received minor injuries, but were not transported to hospital."

Police are working closely with parade organisers, the driver of the vehicle and the company to identify those responsible for the assault.

"We understand this was an unsettling event, where multiple people have become injured, and not the end to the parade which was wanted," Insp Whittaker acknowledged.

Police are urging people to not take matters into their own hands.

"As this incident demonstrates, something may not be what it seems to you at first, and others stepping in can result in unnecessary injuries and further distress."
