Wellington City Council is warning residents to be on the alert for a man visiting homes claiming to be a council building inspector.

The council said it has received three reports of a man door-knocking in the Karori-Kelburn area in the past few days.

The man has asked to look around properties but not produced any identification.

The council said its building and plumbing inspectors usually operated from council-branded vehicles and wore council-branded clothing.

Spokesperson Chris Scott said its building inspectors also carried identification.

He said any residents who got an unexpected visit from someone claiming to be from the city council should ask to see identification.

Scott said if it was not produced residents had the right to demand the person leave their property.

The council asked anyone who had concerns about the legitimacy of someone claiming to be an inspector, to notify council staff on 04 499 4444.

It also recommended people notify the police.
