Dannevirke forestry worker found dead down bank after not returning from work

A Dannevirke forestry worker has been found dead down a bank after not returning home on Friday night.   

Police said they were alerted at 8:15pm on Friday night that a man understood to be working in a forestry block near Dannevirke had not returned home.  

This resulted in a search and the landowner of the forestry block, who was assisting in the hunt, found the man dead down a bank.   

Police confirmed they had recovered the man's body with the assistance of Fire and Emergency New Zealand and Search and Rescue on Saturday morning.   

Police said WorkSafe had been advised about the man's death   

WorkSafe has confirmed it's opened an investigation into the incident.   

"Forestry is a high-risk sector in Aotearoa, and WorkSafe is committed to reducing injury and fatality rates in partnership with workers, industry, iwi, and communities."
