Traffic was briefly blocked on the main highway near Foxton on Monday morning for the funeral of a Head Hunters leader but police say gang members have been well-behaved.

It comes after members of several different gangs and other mourners gathered in Auckland on Saturday morning, before travelling 520km south to farewell former Head Hunter boss William 'Bird' Hines in Foxton.

The funeral for Hines was held on Monday morning and it's reported more than 1000 people were at the tangi, including members of several gangs such as Nomads, Black Power, Mongrel Mob, Killer Beez and Greazy Dogs.

Assistant Commissioner Mike Johnson provided an update on Monday and said police will continue to have a visible presence in Foxton.

It was reported that State Highway 1 was briefly blocked on Monday morning during the funeral of Hines.

RNZ reported the highway was blocked as Hines' coffin was transported along the road.

Stuff reported there were "intense scenes" after the tangi and the highway was "packed" with people, some of whom were swearing and pulling the fingers at police officers, while others were doing burnouts.

Johnson said officers will continue to monitor the movements of gang members travelling home from the funeral of Hines.

"The current focus is on Foxton and the tangi proceedings occurring there this morning," Johnson said.

Johnson said gang members were well-behaved and there were "no significant issues" overnight but did add police dealt with several driving-related offences.

"We will continue to monitor the event and are prepared to respond when needed," Johnson said.

"Police Eagle helicopter will remain in the area to provide support as required. There is a traffic management plan in place and lane restrictions outside the Motuiti Marae, on State Highway 1."

Johnson also thanked the public for their patience over the weekend.

"We continue to ask that anyone who witnesses any unlawful or unsafe behaviour gets in touch with us via 105 either over the phone or online," Johnson said.

"When you are making your report, please advise if you have any videos or photos of the offending. Anyone who finds themselves in a position where they do not feel safe is asked to contact police immediately on 111."
