A man has been arrested after "reports of him discharging a firearm" from a house in Whanganui.

Police said officers were called to a Iwiroa Tce address on Monday night, assisted by the Armed Offenders Squad.

A police spokesperson said cordons were placed around the address and, due to a possible, gas leak, neighbouring houses were evacuated "as a precaution".

A 50-year-old man was taken into custody with the assistance of the police negotiation team and charges were "being considered", the spokesperson said.

No one was injured, police added.
