Pro-Palestine protesters gathered outside the Auckland Museum and covered lights with red and green cellophane on Tuesday night.

More than 100 people attended the gathering and were encouraged to "bring keffiyehs, flags, cars, posters and voices" in a social media post that went up shortly before the protest.

"Let's cover the museum lights with red and green cellophane to illuminate the building in the colours of Palestine," the post instructed.

A post was also shared to X/Twitter which showed a photo of the museum aglow with green and red, with the comment: "Since the museum wasn't willing to light up in the Palestinian colours, we did it ourselves."

Police told Newshub officers had a "prescence at the Auckland War Memorial Museum last night from around 7pm, after reports that over 100 people had gathered to protest".

Officers found "no offending was occurring and left the scene just before 9:30pm", police said.

Newshub has approached the museum for a response.

It comes after the museum was washed in blue lights in October, in support of Israel. This drew criticism, with pro-Palestine supporters "blacking out" the museum lights.

At the time, museum chief executive David Reeves apologised on Facebook - saying it had wanted it to be an "expression of hope for peace".
