An 11-year-old child is part of a group of eight young people arrested after attempting to break into cars in West Auckland overnight.

Waitematā West Relieving Area Commander, Inspector Jason Edwards, says the group fled after being disturbed in Westgate around 2am.

The Police Eagle Helicopter followed the vehicle on Zefiro Drive, allegedly travelling at double the posted speed limit.

After failing to stop for police, the vehicle was pursued along the North-Western Motorway towards the city before being abandoned near Huruhuru Road in Massey.

Inspector Jason Edwards says all those involved were arrested, with two boys aged 14 and 15 due to appear in Waitakere Youth Court this week, and six others have been referred to Youth Aid.

The youngest of which was 11.

It comes after a 10-year-old was allegedly involved in a night of crime in East Auckland last week.

Four youths were taken into custody after crashing into a fence while fleeing police.

It's alleged the group took part in two ram-raids in Pakuranga and East Tamaki.

On today's arrests, Inspector Jason Edwards thanked the community for their vigilance in reporting suspicious activity.

"A good description was provided to police, and assisted the Eagle crew when they arrived in the area."
