King Charles and Queen Camilla plan NZ tour in 2024 - reports

King Charles and Queen Camilla are planning on coming to New Zealand in late 2024, according to overseas reports.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported on Tuesday morning Charles and Camilla will visit Australia and New Zealand in October next year.

It would be the first time the head of the monarchy visited New Zealand since the late Queen Elizabeth in February 2002. When Charles was the Prince of Wales, he visited New Zealand 10 times between 1970 and 2019.

"King Charles is planning to visit Australia and New Zealand in October," said a former diplomat, who has had contact with the monarch and was speaking on condition of anonymity to the Sydney Morning Herald.

The former diplomat told the Sydney Morning Herald any royal visit would coincide with the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa.

CHOGM 2024 is due to begin on October 21 and usually lasts a week. The meeting involves 56 developed and developing nations held every two years including Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand and Malaysia.

The former diplomat said it's unclear if the royal visit would occur before or after the week-long event.

Sydney Morning Herald also cited a well-placed source in Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's government, who said the trip hasn't been officially confirmed yet.

"It would be next October, it's very possible it will happen. It would be around the time of CHOGM that he would come, either before or after, that would make sense" that source said.
