A person is in critical condition in hospital after a liquor store robbery in Auckland on Saturday.

It happened at the Chapel Downs Discount Liquor shop on Dawson Road, in Clover Park.

The store is in a busy area, which also features a butchery, supermarket, dollar shops, laundromats, and takeaway food.

"Police and ambulance attended after receiving a report of a robbery at around 11:20am," a police spokesperson told Newshub.

Newshub understands the victim was struck in the back of the head by the robber who fled the scene.

A worker next door said people ran into her shop to get supplies to help the man who was "bleeding badly everywhere", according to Stuff.

Meanwhile, staff from the nearby Local Doctors Dawson clinic also gave first aid to the injured man.

Police are investigating.
