Police are appealing for information after they discovered a man's body in central Auckland on Friday afternoon.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Brand said officers found the deceased man after arriving at a property on Lynton Road in Maungarei/Mt Wellington just before 2pm.

"Police are treating the circumstances as unexplained."

The man reportedly suffered head injuries at the home, Det Snr Sgt Brand said, and police are speaking with a woman who was there.

"An investigation is now underway to understand exactly what has led to this man's death," he added.

As part of that, police will examine the scene and a pathologist will carry out an autopsy in due course.

Det Snr Sgt Brand said there will be a heightened police presence in the area.

"We need to hear from anyone who may have information that can assist Police with our investigation."
