A teenager has been arrested after a Whakatāne home was shot up on Wednesday evening and left with a broken window.

Police were called to a property on Matirerau Street, Whakatāne just before 10pm after people reported hearing gunshots.

When police arrived at the scene, they found a broken window and a person with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police found an 18-year-old nearby a short time later and he was arrested.

He has been charged with unlawfully possessing ammunition and is due to appear in Whakatane District Court on Tuesday.

Police wouldn't comment when asked by Newshub if it was a drive-by style shooting or if it was gang-related.

Enquiries into the matter are ongoing.
