Video has emerged on social media showing a police officer chasing after a person in handcuffs who had escaped police custody.

The 20-second-long video posted on Facebook shows a police officer chasing after an alleged offender down the side of State Highway 2, Pacific Coast Highway in Mount Maunganui.

As the offender continues to sprint clear of the officer, the video appears to show a car breaking in front of the escapee to try and stop him.

The 30-year-old man was remanded in custody and is due to re-appear in Tauranga District Court on Tuesday.

He is facing charges including assaulting a person in a family relationship and possessing an offensive weapon.
