A person has died in a crash in Northland, bringing the holiday road toll to 11.

Emergency services are at the scene of the collision on Russell Whakapara Rd.

The single-car crash was reported at 11:40am and resulted in one death and an injury.

"Sadly, one person has died at the scene," a police spokesperson said.

"A second occupant of the vehicle remains in a serious condition."

The road has been closed between Waikare and De Nora Rds and traffic management is in place.

Due to the remote location of the crash, motorists are being urged to avoid the area if possible.

The serious crash unit will investigate the collision.

It's a busy time of year with Kiwis driving all across the country to get to their New Year's Eve celebration destinations but motorists are being asked for understanding while emergency services carry out work at the scene. Police are urging people to be safe on the road.

The holiday road toll now sits at 11.

It rose to 10 after a person was killed in a single-vehicle crash on State Highway 69 in Tasman in the early hours of Friday.
