Strict cleaning rules in place for boaties to stop dangerous spread of gold clams

Boaties across the North Island are awaiting the next move by officials who are forbidding the movement of 'lake-boats' due to the dangerous spread of gold clams.

The invasive species, first discovered in May this year in Lake Karapiro, has the potential to force native species in our lakes into extinction.

Strict cleaning rules are in place for thousands of boaties this summer but MPI has some big decisions to make at the border too to stop more larvae from getting in.
