Man charged with arson after overnight Whangamatā house fire

A man has been arrested after a two-storey house went up in flames in Whangamatā overnight.  

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) received multiple calls about a blaze on Hauturu Street at just after 9pm on Sunday evening.    

The two-storey home was well-involved in flames with two people understood to have escaped from the fire.

Police confirmed to Newshub a 66-year-old man has been arrested and is due to appear in Hamilton District Court on Monday on an arson charge. 

A FENZ spokesperson said it took four crews just under half an hour to extinguish the flames.   

Four fire trucks were in attendance at the blaze with the spokesperson confirming to Newshub the fire is being treated as suspicious.  

Investigators are due at the scene this morning.
