A Hastings victim of an unsolved homicide was the son of a woman who vanished in one of Hawke's Bay's most high-profile cold cases.

Javon Aranui, 24, was assaulted on December 20 in the vicinity of Jellicoe Street and Hood Street. He was flown to Wellington Hospital where he underwent surgery but sadly died the next day.

Police launched a homicide investigation, however, almost one month later, his killer has not been found.

His mother Annabell Tumanako suffered a similar fate.

Tumanako went missing from Napier when Tumanako was just eight and despite an extensive police investigation, her body was never found.

Tumanako was last seen alive leaving her home on June 23, 2007. However, she never returned, and her car was found unlocked on State Highway 2 on the outskirts of Napier.

An inquest in 2014 concluded she must have died, but while her death remained unexplained, police believe foul play was involved.

Police are urging anyone with information on Aranui's assault to contact them either by calling 105 or going online to https://www.police.govt.nz/use-105 'Update Report'. Information can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111. Please reference file number 231220/1498.
