Large 'fast-moving' fire near Hurunui River, Canterbury now contained

The large vegetation fire in north Waitaha/Canterbury has been contained late Saturday afternoon, but isn't fully under control yet, according to authorities.

Five helicopters and 16 fire trucks were needed to contain the "fast-moving" blaze which burned through 50 hectares.

It started in grass near Domett, and was reported just before 1pm, a spokesperson from Whakaratonga Iwi / Fire and Emergency said.

Principal rural fire officer Bruce Janes told Newshub the fire damaged and destroyed two structures, those being hay sheds.

"No houses [were] damaged, which is great. Unsure of the stock losses," Janes said.

Crews came from surrounding towns including Cheviot, Scargill, Motunau, and Waipara to help.

Motorists were earlier asked to avoid the area and to avoid using drones, because it would have forced firefighters to stop their helicopter operations.

It comes as the region experiences dry, hot and windy weather on Saturday.

Fire crews remain at the scene and will return on Sunday.
