Large fire forces evacuation at Yealands Estate Winery in Marlborough

Staff at a Marlborough winery have been evacuated after a grass fire, covering four hectares, broke out.

Three helicopters and 10 fire engines from stations around Marlborough were fighting the fire, which began just before 11am on Wednesday, Fire and Emergency NZ said.

The Yealands Estate Winery in Seddon has been evacuated as a precaution. No other homes have been evacuated at this stage.

NIWA data shows the general fire risk in the Awatere Valley is high.

Police are assisting with traffic management.

People are asked to keep away from the area while firefighters work to contain the fire.
