Lanes are reopening on Auckland's Southern Motorway (SH1) after a crash on Sunday morning caused major delays.

There were heavy delays northbound and southbound after the crash between Bombay and Ramarama shortly before 11am.

At 11am, Google Maps was showing Great South Road between Drury and Bombay as a faster alternative to SH1.

Police said the crash was due to a driver hitting the median barrier. It appears the driver escaped serious injury, police added.

The NZ Transport Agency said in an 11:30am update lane closures were in place to allow the vehicle to be recovered. The agency did not specifiy how many lanes were closed but urged motorists to "merge with care and expect delays".

At 12:40pm, NZTA said lanes have since reopened but delays should still be expected.
