A "suspicious item" reported to police in Hakatere/Ashburton earlier on Tuesday was found to be no threat, a police spokesperson said.

Officers have since lifted the cordons placed earlier around Tancred Street, and all roads are open again.

"A suspicious item reported to Police at 3:20pm has been checked and found to be of no concern," the spokesperson added.

"Police would like to thank the public for their assistance."

It's unclear what the "item" was.
