The names of the two children who died last week following an accident on their grandmother's farm in the Far North can now be released.

They were Sonny, six, and Eddie, four, a police spokesperson confirmed on Wednesday evening.

Both deaths have been referred to the Coroner.

The young cousins had been holidaying on their grandmother's farm at Pēria, east of Kaitāia, when the utility terrain vehicle they were in struck a boulder and careered into a deep waterhole at Waikainga Stream.

The accident occurred on December 29 on a section of road with no safety barriers. The driver and three other passengers in the vehicle escaped with moderate injuries.

The family has asked for privacy as they grieve and prepare for their funerals.

Detective Senior Sergeant Chris Fouhy, Far North area investigations manager, said police were called after the ATV-style vehicle rolled into a swimming hole in the Waikainga Stream at about 5:15pm last Friday.

The following day the bodies of the children were recovered.

"Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to whānau and friends of these two little boys at this difficult time," Det Snr Sgt Chris Fouhy said on Wednesday.

"This can only be described as a tragedy and we extend our condolences to everyone involved."
