A group of surfers and an off-duty surf lifeguard have attempted to revive a man who was found unresponsive in the water in Raglan.

Shortly after 9 this morning, a group of surfers at Manu Bay discovered a man in the water. Surf Life Saving New Zealand says the group then paddled the man back to shore.

An off-duty lifeguard was watching the rescue unfold on the Manu Bay live surf cam and raced down to the beach to assist.

The group performed CPR on the rocks until paramedics from Hato Hone St John arrived.

Police say despite the best efforts of those first on the scene, the man died on the beach.

The death has been referred to the Coroner.
