A swimmer has been missing off Auckland's Whangaparāoa Peninsula for three days prompting police to ask for help.

The Auckland Maritime Unit is asking for any sightings of the swimmer near the Gulf Harbour Marina to help with their search.

Emergency services were called to the area on Sunday evening after a man was seen in difficulty in the water.

He was seen getting into the water from the rock breakwater, near the entrance to the Gulf Harbour Marina, between 8 and 9pm.

Police, with the assistance of Coastguard, have been searching the immediate area over the last few days but haven't found him.

"Searchers are continuing their efforts on Wednesday and we are now seeking information from the public in relation to our search," police said.

"Anyone who witnessed a male swimming out from the breakwater, or have any other information which may assist, is asked to please contact Police."
