A 20-year-old man has been charged after allegedly stealing a police car before crashing into two vehicles.

The man was taken into custody on Monday and police said they were considering charges.

However, in an update on Tuesday, police said a 20-year-old man was scheduled to appear in the Manukau District Court facing four charges relating to vehicle theft, dangerous driving and failing to stop.

The man is accused of stealing a police car on Puhinui Road just after 1pm Monday while officers were reportedly distracted while attending an "urgent matter".

He is then alleged to have sped off through South Auckland before colliding with two stationary vehicles at the intersection of Great South Road and Alfriston Road just minutes later.

Two members of the public suffered moderate and minor injuries during the crash and were attended to by ambulance staff.

The road was closed for a couple of hours after the crash.
