Two people have died in a crash in Whangārei overnight.
Police said a car went down a bank before hitting a tree and bursting into flames shortly after midnight on Otaika Valley Road (SH15).
Emergency services found both people in the car dead upon arrival.
Police have confirmed a section of State Highway 15 between Otaika and Maungatapere remains closed off with The Serious Crash Unit conducting a scene examination in the coming hours.
Police said motorists should expect delays when travelling through the area and should allow extra time to reach their destination.
