Firefighters are responding to a blaze at a factory in the Auckland suburb of Ōnehunga, during which one person was injured.

The blaze erupted in the building on Galway St on Wednesday afternoon and dozens of firefighters were at the scene.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand assistant area commander Michael Manning said they were called to the scene at 5pm.

On arrival, they found a "large column of smoke" in the area and called for additional resources, he said.

Crews had prevented the fire from spreading to neighbouring buildings.

Manning said one person was located outside of the building with burns and has been taken to the hospital.

He urged residents downwind from the fire to keep windows closed and remain indoors.
