Aucklanders have been left confused over a new set of bus stop markings where a common four-letter word has been misspelt.

A bus stop on Te Atatū Rd has the words "BUS SOTP" marked out in big yellow letters instead of "BUS STOP".

Locals have seen the funny side of the blunder, with one writing on social media "hoping this is photoshopped or else spelling lessons are going to be added to their job description".

"One job," another joked.

However photos taken by Newshub confirmed the error was all too real.

In a statement to NZ Herald, an Auckland Transport spokesperson said they were aware of the spelling error and would be fixing it on Tuesday night, weather permitting.

Auckland Transport's infrastructure and fleet specification manager, Edward Wright, said the fix would be paid for by the contracting company, not Auckland Transport, settling fears that ratepayers would be paying for the mistake.

"The fix is very minor," Wright said.
