Magnitude 5.1 earthquake shakes thousands after striking near Methven, Canterbury

An earthquake has shaken thousands of people in Canterbury on Monday night.

According to GeoNet, the quake struck at 9:21pm around 30km west of Methven. It was recorded as magnitude 5.1 and just 5km deep.

The earthquake was felt by thousands of people on GeoNet, with over 3000 describing it as weak, 1500 as light, and over 100 as moderate.

The shake comes just days after the 13th anniversary of the destructive earthquakes on February 22, 2011.
