A man has been charged with murdering Christchurch dad David Bridgwater.

Almost a month after Bridgwater's death, police have charged a 54-year-old man with murder.

A police spokesperson said the man was arrested at a semi-rural property near Timaru on Friday morning.

Last week, a 51-year-old woman was arrested and charged with accessory after the fact to murder.

"This is a significant development in the investigation and our thoughts are with Mr Bridgwater's family – his mother, brother and two young children," the spokesperson said.

Bridgwater, 38, was found dead on Carisbrooke St in the suburb of Aranui in the early hours of the morning on January 4. His car was found still running on a nearby street.

He died as a result of gunshot wounds, police said.

Police also spent this week searching for items of interest including a gun at the Avon River.

The spokesperson said the National Police Dive Squad and Specialist Search Group have concluded their search of sections of the Avon River and nearby areas of interest and are assessing the results.

The 54-year-old is due to appear in Christchurch District Court later on Friday.
