A man charged with murder over the death of Dunedin man Gurjit Singh has pleaded not guilty.

The 33-year-old man was charged earlier this month and appeared at the High Court in Dunedin on Tuesday.

Name suppression continues.

Singh's body was found covered in blood and glass at his Pine Hill home late last month.

It was later revealed Singh likely died from multiple stab wounds inflicted by a sharp instrument.

"The family wants to know what happened to their son - their hard-working son," said Narindervir Singh from the Otago Punjabi Foundation Trust.

"This incident has shaken the community a lot - unbelievable."

Before his death, Gurjit Singh was excitedly awaiting his wife's arrival from India who was expected to land in New Zealand this month.

His body has since been taken to Christchurch to be repatriated to India.
