Person drowns in Auckland's Cockle Bay

A person has drowned at an east Auckland beach this afternoon.

Emergency services were notified of a person found unresponsive in the water at Cockle Bay around 12.30pm.

A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said staff sent one ambulance to the scene.

"Despite efforts to resuscitate the person, they have since sadly died at the scene," a police spokesperson said.

The death will be referred to the Coroner.

This brings the number of drownings in 2024 to 11. At the same time last year, there had been 16 drownings, according to Water Safety NZ.
