The search will resume Wednesday morning for the 72-year-old man missing in the Tararua Forest Park.
Police said they were calling in extra teams from Wellington, Whanganui and Taihape to help.
The man was reported missing around 4pm Tuesday.
Police search and rescue staff from Horowhenua, Wellington and Palmerston North searched the area yesterday. Private helicopters, as well as those from the Airforce's number 3 squadron, were also called in to help.
Police said most searchers remained in the area overnight and were preparing to start the search again.
Police wanted anyone who may have any information to contact 105 straight away.
