Waikato police officer resigns after being charged with assaulting partner

A Waikato police officer has resigned from the organisation after being charged with assaulting his partner.  

In May 2021, an investigation was opened by police into allegations made against an off-duty officer.  

The Independent Police Conduct Authority confirmed the officer was charged with impedes breathing and assaults person in a family relationship. The officer has since resigned from police and court action is ongoing.  

"The authority is satisfied that the Police investigation was appropriate and thorough," the watchdog said.

A police spokesperson confirmed the officer was charged and is no longer employed.  

They were unable to comment further due to the matter being before the courts.
