Five youths - one just nine years old - have been arrested after allegedly stealing a vehicle and fleeing police in south Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland.

It started just after 7:30pm on Thursday, when police spotted the vehicle driving through Takaanini.

Counties Manukau Inspector Mark Chivers said officers confirmed the vehicle was stolen, before trying to pull it over.

"It has failed to do so and fled from Police," he added.

Police eventually tracked the youths to Manurewa, "where a member of the public has allegedly been [struck]," said Insp Chivers, but they were not injured.

Insp Chivers said the driver stopped on Seward Place, before three passengers got out and fled on foot.

"The vehicle was then followed by Eagle to Burbank Road where it stopped and the driver and passenger got out and entered a property."

All five youths were taken into custody "without further incident", Insp Chivers said.

The youths have been referred to Youth Aid Services.
