A baby has died in a South Taranaki fire, police have confirmed.
Emergency services were called to a property on Fitzroy St in Normanby about 4:10am on Friday.
"We know that the community will be shocked and saddened by this incident," Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Louise Prendergast said in a statement.
"Police and FENZ [Fire and Emergency NZ] investigators are at the scene and a scene examination is underway, along with enquiries in the area as part of the initial stages of an investigation.
"We are working hard to establish the circumstances that have led to this tragic incident."
A police presence remains in the area.
Support is being offered to those involved.
