Police say a body found in a burnt-out car in Hastings on Wednesday is being treated as suspicious.

The car fire, at an orchard on Irongate Road West, was reported to police at 8.20pm on Tuesday.

On Thursday, police confirmed they are treating the death of the person found inside the car as suspicious.

It comes after a scene examination was conducted at the orchard and another property on Flaxmere's Sunderland Drive on Wednesday.

"Police are following positive lines of enquiry and can confirm a postmortem has been conducted this morning," police said.

"We are aware of commentary around the death and urge anyone with information to come forward to police," Detective Inspector Martin James said.

"We would especially like to hear from anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage on Irongate Road West and Sunderland Drive, between 4:30pm and 8:30pm on Tuesday 26 March."
