Emergency services attend explosion in central Wellington apartment building

Emergency services rushed to central Wellington on Friday following an explosion in an apartment building.

A police spokesperson told Newshub emergency services are at a building on Church Street, which has since been evacuated.

Boulcott St is closed, and police have asked the public to stay away.

Two people have been taken to hospital following the explosion, one seriously injured, the other in a moderate condition, Wellington Free Ambulance confirmed to Newshub.

Nearly a dozen fire crews rushed to the scene at about 1pm, after they were notified about a fire alarm activating inside an apartment building, a Fire and Emergency spokesperson told Newshub.

"Upon arrival crews were able to ascertain there had been an explosion."

Vicki McLaren, Kāinga Ora regional director for Greater Wellington, told Newshub the agency is concerned to learn of reports of an explosion at one of its leased Church St flats.

"Our immediate priority is checking on the safety and wellbeing of our customers and we have staff onsite who are ready to offer support once we can access the building or reach the customers by phone."

McLaren said at this stage, Kāinga Ora believes only one person has been injured, but it's unconfirmed.

She said the cause of the incident is now a matter for Fire and Emergency.

But Fire and Emergency told Newshub it's been handed over to police.

More to come.
