Evacuations, one person hospitalised in hazardous substance 'incident' in Auckland's Kingsland

Homes and businesses in Auckland's Kingsland are being evacuated as emergency services rush to an "incident" involving a hazardous substance.

Hato Hone St John told Newshub one person has been taken to hospital in a moderate condition.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said they were called to the scene about 1pm on Monday.

"There are eight crews in attendance, supporting other emergency services. Crews are working to neutralise the substance and are monitoring for contamination and odour spread," the spokesperson said.

The product has been removed and neutralised, but firefighters remain onsite checking the house for any other hazards.

A police spokesperson told Newshub officers were assisting firefighters at an address on New North Rd in Kingsland.

"There are concerns for a person's wellbeing," the police spokesperson said.

"We are evacuating some homes and businesses in the area as a precaution."

New North Rd in Kingsland, between Bond St and St Lukes Rd, has been closed, Auckland Transport said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

Bus 20 will detour via Sandringham Rd and buses 22R and 22N will detour via Sandringham Rd and New North Rd.

Motorists are asked to expect delays.
