One person has been airlifted to hospital in a critical condition, following a fiery crash in north Auckland.

Another in moderate condition has been taken to hospital via road ambulance, according to Hato Hone St John.

The crash caused traffic to build up on State Highway 1 just south of Wellsford and there are now major delays northbound.

Police earlier closed SH1 in both directions after the two-vehicle crash, which happened just after 4pm near McPherson Way, according to a spokesperson.

"It appears there are injuries," they said.

The two vehicles were completely burnt out by 5:15pm.

As at 4:40pm, SH1 is under stop/go traffic management south of Wellsford, near Wayby Station Rd, according to Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA).

The agency said to expect delays and consider using SH16 instead.

Newshub was sent a video with what appeared to be two air ambulances (helicopters) arriving at the scene.

It comes just a couple of hours after a campervan "exploded" on SH60 in Tasman, after a witness says the driver suddenly noticed smoke under the bonnet.

One witness of the crash, Dion Parkes, told the NZ Herald there was a man covered in burns and blood was everywhere.

"People were pouring water on him. It was absolutely horrific," he said.

It was a T-bone crash, according to Parkes, who said both vehicles caught alight "pretty much immediately".
