A number of people are in custody after police targeted street racing events in Auckland on Saturday night.

Police said around 200 cars were involved in events in Penrose, Onehunga and Westgate.

Three people were taken into custody after allegedly speeding and running a red light on Bush Road in Albany just after midnight. Police said they refused to stop for officers and were eventually taken into custody across the city on Henderson Valley Rd in west Auckland.

Three men aged 16,18 and 20 are due to appear in the North Shore District Court this week over the incident.

"Police responded to incidents as they arose to disrupt activity and take enforcement action where necessary," police said in statement.

Another vehicle seen driving dangerously earlier in the evening was spotted in Karaka around 3:20am and was stopped by police on the SH16 Rosebank Rd off-ramp.

Two people were taken into custody but a police spokesperson said they didn't have details on charges at the time of writing.
