Police believe one person has died in a large house fire in rural Taranaki early this morning.
Emergency services were called to the fire at a Fitzroy Street property in the small village of Normanby shortly after 4am Friday.
Fire and Emergency (FENZ) sent six fire crews, three support teams and two tankers to the blaze. A FENZ spokesperson said the second alarm fire was "well involved" when firefighters arrived at the scene.
Police confirmed to Newshub it believes one person died in the fire.
The blaze is not being treated as suspicious at this stage and an investigation into the blaze is underway.
