A pedestrian has been taken to hospital after a crash at the Basin Reserve in Wellington.

Police told Newshub officers were called to the crash involving a car and pedestrian near Rugby St about 5:50am on Tuesday.

"The pedestrian has been taken to hospital, and the Police Serious Crash Unit has been advised," police said.

Wellington Free Ambulance said one person was taken to Wellington Hospital in a serious condition. They couldn't provide further information on the patient.

The Basin Reserve was down to the outside lane after the crash but in an update at 7:40am, the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) said it had been cleared and all northbound lanes were open.

"However, drivers heading north on State Highway 1 past the Basin Reserve can expect delays until queued traffic clears," NZTA added.

"Road users should factor this into their travel plans and allow extra time for their journeys."
