Person dead, another injured after serious assault in Brown's Bay, Auckland

One person has died and another was seriously injured after an assault at a premises in Auckland's Browns Bay.

Emergency services responded to a report of an assault at a premises on Clyde Road, Browns Bay at 5:48pm Thursday.

A St John spokesperson said they sent two ambulances and one rapid response vehicle to the scene, where they treated two patients.

Police have since confirmed the victim of the assault has been transported to Auckland Hospital with serious injuries.

"The offender responsible for inflicting the serious injuries, died at the scene from a self-inflicted injury," police said.

The victim and offender were known to each other, police added.

Police said staff are providing support to those affected by this traumatic incident.

The area is cordoned while an investigation into the circumstances is conducted, but no one else is being sought in relation to the incident.

The owner of a local business close to the area where the incident happened told Newshub she had heard someone had been stabbed.

She said there was a heavy police presence and a nearby Starbucks had closed because of the assault.

She said she was closing her shop soon because she was concerned for the safety of her staff.

There are reports the assault took place near Neco Sushi on Clyde Road.

Witnesses have been commenting on a Brown's Bay Facebook page.

One poster said: "The police have him - bystanders shut him in the sushi shop until police arrived. It's a horrifying scene down there."

Another said "the police went in with guns to get him".

One member of the group said "It's not what you expect to see in this country. I feel very heartbroken for the victim. It would have been extremely frightening."
