Safety warnings have been lifted in Karaka and residents allowed outside after a gas leak in the area on Tuesday night.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand responded to the leak south of Auckland after a tunnelling machine struck a gas main.

Three fire trucks were sent to the scene after large amounts of gas went into the air, with concerns it could impact residents.

An emergency response team from power authority Vector shut down the gas main late on Tuesday night.
