State Highway 1 is closed after a serious crash north of Christchurch this afternoon.
Emergency services were called to the crash involving two vehicles in Leithfield at 4:20pm Tuesday.
A police spokesperson said initial indications suggest there are serious injuries.
NZ Transport Agency said the highway has been closed between Gartys Road and Mays Road intersections.
"A detour around the crash is now in place: For northbound traffic, turn left onto Gartys Road, right onto Terrace Road, and then right onto Mays Road. Reverse for southbound traffic," an NZTA spokesperson said.
The highway could remain closed for eight hours, the spokesperson added.
