The multi-vehicle crash near the Mount Riley Road intersection was reported around 2:30pm on Sunday.

Police say the person died at the scene.

Please contact 105 by phone or online at 105.police.govt.nz, using 'Update report', and reference event number P058280167.

State Highway 6, Okaramio is currently closed between Leslies Road and Mount Riley Road, and is expected to remain closed for several hours while Police investigate the crash.

"Drivers should avoid the area or delay their journey. No local road detours are available," NZ Transport Agency said in a statement.

"The only available alternative route between Nelson and Blenheim is via State Highway 63 St Arnaud, and State Highway 6, Glenhope to Wakefield.

"This route is significantly longer and will add to travel times. Drivers, particularly those with ferry connections in Picton, must plan their journeys accordingly."
