Taxi driver requires surgery after violent assault in Palmerston North

Police are seeking help from the public after a taxi driver was attacked in Palmerston North early this morning.

Emergency services were called to The Square around 2am on Saturday to a report of a serious assault on the driver and a person who came to his aid.

The taxi driver will now require surgery.

A 25-year-old has been arrested and is due to appear in the Palmerston North District Court on March 7, charged with assault with intent to injure, injuring with intent to injure, and assaulting Police.

Detective Sergeant Shelley Ross said police would like to hear from any witnesses they haven't yet spoken to.
