Thousands of people have reportedly felt a light earthquake near Christchurch.
The jolt, centred about five kilometres east of Christchurch, struck at 5:02pm on Thursday.
GeoNet is reporting the quake, which was 10 kilometres deep, at 3.4 magnitude.
At the time of publication, nearly 4000 people as far as Auckland had reported feeling the quake online.
