Wellington jolted by afternoon 4.6-magnitude earthquake

Wellingtonians have been jolted by a quake on Saturday afternoon.

According to GeoNet, the magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck 40km west of Porirua at a depth of 33km just before 3pm.

With more than 9000 people on GeoNet saying they felt the quake, multiple people on X (Twitter) have reported their experience.

"Bit of a Saturday shake near Porirua this afternoon. Did you feel it?" the Wellington Region Emergency Management Office wrote.

"I thought I lost my balance at Moore Wilson's," one person tweeted.

"Very distinct and sharp p- and s-wave jolts there, in central Wellington!" another said.
